From the layers of (me)mory no. 002 collection as part of the layers of (me)mory series

Oil paint monotype on paper
mounted on 20.00 mm Oak wood panel
11.90 × 14.30 cm

As opposed to the complex, puzzle-like structures of (dis)arranged narratives and vanishing pieces, singular frame no. 001 and singular frame no. 002 isolate single moments, stand-alone fragments of memory disconnected from any broader context. These individual monotypes exist as singular impressions, capturing a specific instance without reference to what comes before or after. In singling each of these pieces, the works emphasize how certain memories remain distinct and untethered, frozen in time disconnected from other memories while the others may blur or fade. They serve as quiet counterpoints to the larger compositions, highlighting the contrast between fragmented recollections and those that remain fixed, unchanging in the mind’s eye.

PROCESS & TECHNIQUES

The process behind the layers of (me)mory no. 002 collection builds upon the methods established in the previous collection. Each work begins with a single oil painting on canvas, which serves as the matrix for a sequence of monotype prints. The painted surface is used in place of a traditional printing plate, allowing for the direct transfer of pigment onto paper through contact and pressure. Unlike standard monotype techniques using metal or plexiglass, the canvas surface introduces a unique texture and absorbency that adds irregularity and depth to each impression.

Oil paint is applied in successive layers onto the same canvas, and sheets of paper are pressed into the canvas and left in place for extended periods, allowing pigment to partially adhere and dry before being removed. This slow process produces unexpected results, some areas transfer clearly, while others resist, leading to partially fragmented or incomplete impressions. Each pull carries the marks, textures, and gestures of the painting, embedding a sense of time and change through the movement and layering created.

As the work evolves, the canvas continues to accumulate paint, becoming a visual and conceptual archive. Paper fragments pulled from various stages are then cut, reassembled, and collaged to form new compositions. This layered, iterative approach echoes the fragmented nature of memory, its overlaps, omissions, and reconfigurations. The inclusion of panel-mounted works, modular grids, and isolated impressions allows for both dense narrative fields and singular reflections within the same collection.

MEDIUM & MATERIALS

These works are created using oil paint based monotype techniques on professional-grade printmaking paper. Each print is mounted onto 20.00 mm Oak wood panels.

SIZE

Works within this collection vary in scale, ranging from small intimate pieces of 11.90 × 14.30 cm to larger compositions spanning 92.00 × 110.00 cm.

EDITION & CERTIFICATION

This collection consists of 5 unique one-of-a-kind works.

Each piece is hand-signed on the back of the artwork and on the frame itself (when framed) and comes with a signed certificate of authenticity including an image, detailing the title, materials, and date of creation.

FRAMING & MATTING

Each work is sold ready for installation, either stretched on canvas or mounted directly onto a wooden panel and presented as a standalone object. These panels are designed to be displayed without additional framing or matting. Their depth and clean edges allow for wall-mounted presentation. Though the artwork is best appreciated in its original mounted form, for those wishing to explore framing options, floating frames or shadow boxes may be considered.

ARCHIVAL QUALITY

All materials used in this collection are carefully selected for their archival properties, ensuring the longevity of each work. Archival quality means that the papers, paints, adhesives, and supports are acid-free and lightfast ensuring long-term durability. These choices preserve the structural and visual integrity of each work over time, allowing them to be appreciated for generations to come with proper care.

ARTWORK CARE

To preserve the quality and longevity of the artwork keep the work out of direct sunlight to prevent color fading of the print over time. Additionally, keep away from high humidity or moisture to protect the support from warping. If framing, use UV-protective glass and archival quality supports to further safeguard pigments against environmental damage. Handle the artwork with clean, dry hands to prevent transferring oils to the surface.
