Oil paint monotypes on papermounted on 20mm Oak wood
60 interchangeable pieces of 11.90 × 14.30 cm
Composed of 60 interchangeable monotype paintings, early (re)collections captures the fluid, ever-shifting nature of memory. Rather than depicting fixed moments, these pieces translate pieces of memories into layered colors, textures, and movement—echoing the way childhood memories surface in flashes of sensation rather than clear narratives. Each piece exists independently yet is intrinsically linked to the others, much like memories that continuously evolve and influence one another. The ability to rearrange these fragments further reflects the instability of memory, as recollections are not static but rather in constant flux, constantly shaped by time and experience.

PROCESS & TECHNIQUES
early (re)collections is a multi-layered exploration of memory, fragmentation, and reconstruction, created through a monotype-based approach that prioritizes texture, layering, and the interaction of surfaces. The piece is composed of oil paint monotypes transferred onto paper, mounted onto Oak wood panels, and structured as a grid of 60 interchangeable fragments.
The process begins with painting directly onto a canvas surface, where oil paint is applied in layers to create a richly textured, gestural base. Paper is then carefully pressed into the painted surface and left for an extended period, sometimes days or weeks, to allow the pigment to transfer to the paper in varied ways. This technique results in partial adhesion and separation, meaning that when the paper is pulled away, it carries not only the pigment but also remnants of texture, cracks, and areas of resistance, echoing the way memories can be both preserved and fragmented over time.
Through repeated interactions between the canvas and multiple sheets of paper, each impression borrows and leaves behind traces of previous layers. This continuous exchange of pigment and texture reinforces the idea of memory as a dynamic, evolving process rather than a fixed moment.
Once the monotype prints are complete, the monotype prints are further fragmented into individual pieces and mounted on wood which are arranged into a grid format that allows for reconfiguration and movement. The grid is both a structure and a disruption, a method of imposing order while simultaneously breaking apart the original composition. This format mirrors how the mind pieces together fragments of memory, sometimes fluidly, sometimes in disjointed ways.
By embracing the organic unpredictability of monotype printing, layered separations, and the act of physically cutting and rearranging the composition, early (re)collections captures the essence of how memories interact, overlap, and shift, leaving traces of themselves behind.
MEDIUM & MATERIALS
These works are created using oil paint based monotype techniques on professional-grade printmaking paper. Each print is mounted onto 20.00 mm Oak wood.
